Tips for Choosing a Plan

Which eSIM Plan
Should You Choose?

Start with your trip style, then choose the closest data range.

Small Data Plan

If you mainly need maps, messaging apps, online search, emailing, restaurant reservations, and translation, a smaller data plan may be enough. These tasks are usually lighter than video streaming or large uploads.

Medium to Large Data Plan

If you use social media every day, upload photos, watch videos, use video calls, or work from your phone or laptop, choose a larger data plan. Travelers who use mobile hotspot/tethering should be especially careful because connected devices can use data quickly.

Unlimited Plan

If you prefer not to monitor a fixed allowance, an unlimited plan may be a better fit. Unlimited plans are subject to a daily usage condition, and service may be temporarily suspended if usage exceeds 15GB in one day. Review the current conditions before ordering.

Choose by Length of Stay

Recommended Plans by Travel Length

Travelers sightseeing in Shibuya
Consider: 5GB

Short Trip: 3-5 Days

For a short stay, focus on how much you will rely on your phone between your hotel, train stations, restaurants, and sightseeing spots. Light users can often start with a lower data amount. If you expect heavy photo uploads or watch videos, choose a larger plan.

Travelers at Kaminarimon
Consider: 7-Day Unlimited

One Week in Japan

For a one-week trip, many travelers use mobile data every day for maps, transit searches, QR reservations, translation, and messaging. A 7-day unlimited plan can reduce the need to monitor a fixed allowance, while a fixed-data plan may be sufficient for lighter use. Compare both based on your expected daily usage.

Traveler photographing Mount Fuji
Consider: 14-Day Unlimited

Two Weeks or More

For longer trips, data use becomes less predictable. A larger data plan or unlimited plan can reduce the risk of running out of data. Business travelers, remote workers, and content-heavy users should plan for more data than casual tourists.

Data Usage Guide

How Much Data Do You Need in Japan?

Data needs depend on apps, habits, and whether you also utilize hotel or cafe WiFi.
The safest approach is to plan around your heaviest expected use, not your lightest day.
Common Low-Data Uses

A Smaller Data Plan
Is Recommended!

  • Checking maps and train transfers
  • Sending messages
  • Reading emails
  • Looking up restaurant or attraction details
  • Using translation for short text
Using maps on a smartphone
Common High-Data Uses

A Larger Data Plan
Is Recommended!

  • Video calls
  • Streaming videos
  • Uploading large amounts of photos or videos
  • Cloud backups
  • Using tethering with a laptop or tablet
Watching video on a smartphone

Usage by Data Allowance

What Can You Do with 1GB, 5GB, and 10GB?

1GB

The 1GB plan can cover light use such as occasional messaging and transit searches, but video streaming and cloud backups can use it quickly.

5GB

The 5GB plan provides more room for regular maps, messaging, browsing, and occasional social media use.

10GB

The 10GB plan provides more capacity for frequent navigation, social media, and photo sharing. Travelers planning regular video calls, streaming, large uploads, or tethering should compare the 20GB, 30GB, and unlimited options before ordering.

TipTo prevent unexpected usage, disable automatic app updates, cloud photo backups, and background downloads in your phone settings before leaving home.

Important Notes About Unlimited eSIM Plans

Unlimited plans do not have a fixed total data allowance, but they are subject to a daily usage condition. If data use exceeds 15GB in one day, service may be temporarily suspended.

For trips of 15 days or more, NINJA WiFi currently instructs customers to purchase two 14-day unlimited plans because consecutive-day coverage is limited by the system.

Please review the current unlimited-plan conditions before placing your order.

FAQ

FAQ About eSIM Plans for Japan

Which Japan eSIM plan should I choose for a first trip?

AChoose based on daily use. Light users can choose a smaller data plan, while travelers who use maps, translation, social media, and bookings throughout the day should consider a larger data plan or an unlimited plan.

Is 1GB enough for travel in Japan?

A1GB can work for very light use, but it is not ideal for streaming, video calls, uploads, or tethering. If you rely on mobile data daily, choose more data.

What happens if I use all prepaid data?

AFor fixed-data plans, mobile data stops when the purchased allowance is used. Choose a plan with enough data for your expected usage.

Are unlimited eSIM plans truly unlimited?

AUnlimited plans are subject to a daily usage condition. Service may be temporarily suspended if usage exceeds 15GB in one day.

Can I top up data later?

AYes. After your initial eSIM purchase, you can add data online and continue using the same eSIM. Available top-up amounts and prices are available on the eSIM plan page.
